Shades of Gray ~ A poem by Ernie Thompson

They feel secure in their world of black and white,
As they serve God who watches over them.

They do what the Good Book says; it is their light.
Now it’s up to you to shine your lights on them!

How in hell could this happen? What gave them the right?
Do they think the law is beneath them?

Are they in jail? Those who preyed on you in the night?
Hell, no! So far that hasn’t happened to them!

People of faith sheltered in a world of black and white,
Devoted to almighty God watching over them….

‘Forgive and forget’ is all they’ll sight.
That’s not enough! You must challenge them!

Pursue truth and justice; keep up the good fight!
Why do they hide those evil doers still amongst them?

Look at their church! The steeple broke off last night!
They’re staring at it now; it lies close beside them.

Will they face up to their crimes? Do what is right?
Listen to your voices calling out to them?

People of faith sheltered in a world of black and white,
Devoted to almighty God watching over them….

If they could only see the shades of gray, change they might.
Dear God, who out there is going to save them?
